035 | Giving Yourself Grace or Making Excuses?
There’s been a hell of a lot going on in my world lately, and I find myself often saying, “I’m giving myself grace.”
There’s nothing wrong with this, but it did make me wonder: How do you know when you’re giving yourself grace or if you’re just making excuses because you’re too comfortable where you’re at and you don’t want to give up that comfort?
Of course, in this instance, the “you” is “me” and I’ve been trying to honestly reflect on whether or not I’ve been giving myself grace or if I just don’t want to disturb the little bit of comfort I have.
And then I got COVID and I was like, yep, I’m giving myself grace.
But this is a real question. Sometimes it can be hard to know for sure if you’re just dealing with a lot and you need to take a break to take care of yourself, or if you’re using what’s happening in your life as an excuse to not make changes you’re afraid or overwhelmed to make.
Regardless of which side of the fence you’re on, it’s OK.
In this episode though, I give you five questions you can ask yourself to determine if you’re giving yourself grace or making excuses, and I give you a few tips to keep in mind as you’re asking yourself these questions.
If you’re the kind of person who needs to cut to the chase and you just want the questions, here are the questions you can ask yourself:
- What are you putting off, and why?
- How will you know when you’re “ready to make changes”?
- Building on that, what does “ready” look like, and do you see yourself getting there? Ho can you break down the steps to help you get “ready”?
- What happens if you don’t make changes?
- Based on where you’re at, after whatever life event you’re experiencing, do your original goals still make sense?
Things to Consider
- Ask yourself these questions as if you were asking a friend, and treat your responses as if they’re coming from your friend. How would you respond to them?
- Play Devil’s advocate. Intentionally argue against yourself and see what comes up for you.
- Trust yourself. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter which side of the fence you’re on, and you know yourself best.
- Take a few steps backward. Know that it’s OK that if you have to step back or start over with your goals, it’s OK. You don’t have to pick up where you left off, and sometimes that’s not in your best interest anyway.
